Which genres are the most popular ones?
The top 5 genres are Action, Sports, Shooter, Role-Playing and Platform Games looking at the global market.
How have the sales varied between geographic regions over time?
The Games industry peaked in the year 2008 on a global scale. Since then, all geographic areas have declined. Interestingly the steepest decline can be observed in the Northern American Sales. It can be observed that the EU sales even surpassed the Nothern American Sales. It is also interesting that Japanese sales had a new peak in 2016.
How are the sales for the top 5 genres different in each region?
In absolute terms, the Nothern American Market has still the highest sales in all the 5 genres. Yet the EU has high sales in Action, Sports and Shooter Games. Japan has by far the highest market share for role-playing games.
Conclusions & Recommendations
To adjust the Games Company’s marketing strategy, I recommend continuing a large budget share in Nothern America. It always was and still is an important market for the Games Industry.
At the same time, it is recommended to increase the marketing budget for Europe as the market has risen over the last years, so there is high potential!
Japan has by far the highest shares in the role-playing genre, which we should focus on and invest in.
